Sound Science - The REAGECON Newsletter
........................................................................................................................................

In this issue:

Foresight – John Barron, MD, REAGECON

Since the early to late 1990s, the laboratory market has been in the midst of a revolutionary transformation. Prior to that period, analytical scientists were very preoccupied with new technological developments, product quality and discrepancies in quality and functionality between products from different suppliers that purported to perform the same task.

Although quality and technology still matters, the gap between different products and technologies from different locations throughout the world has narrowed and now there is a major shift in thinking and requirements of scientists towards service excellence, outstanding customer care, supply chain excellence and waste disposal.

More specifically, customers now demand that their suppliers can offer calibration, qualification, service, bundling and training in addition to being a complete one stop shop for a vast range of scientific apparatus and consumables. The challenge facing all suppliers of laboratory apparatus is to re-skill, up-skill and hire scientists and engineers that can meet these ever changing demands. In a series of articles to be published in coming issues of this newsletter, we will examine each of these areas on an individual basis and try to explore how suppliers can fulfil the requirements of the scientist of today.

REAGECON Opens New Lean Manufacturing Laboratory
In May 2007, REAGECON opened a new manufacturing laboratory in its Shannon-based plant. Through its study and application of LEAN THINKING principles, the company has completely re-designed its batch-production of chemical standards (in which it is a world leader), and which are supplied to the Pharmaceutical, Environmental, Life Sciences, Clinical and Education Sectors globally. The project plan forecasts an increase in production of up to 50% to meet Market Demand and the Customer Service Level Agreements it provides for “on time and in full” delivery. The laboratory was opened by Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley.

REAGECON’S New Lean Manufacturing Laboratory

The Ergonomics of Microscopy

REAGECON is pleased to announce that it has become a Distributor for the Vision Biomed range of Microscopes to the laboratory sector in Ireland.

Vision Biomed has been manufacturing ergonomically optimised microscopes since 1958 using advanced patented technology. They provide the operator with the ability to carry out procedures comfortably, leading to increased productivity and offer fatigue-free viewing with superb hand/eye co-ordination for improved quality.

To this end, they fit perfectly into REAGECON’s product range which is based on its passion for Sound Science and Good Laboratory Practice.

If you would like more information or a demonstration of Vision Biomed the range of microscopes, please visit http://www.reagecon.com/cat_vision.shtml, email us at mailto:sales@reagecon.ie, or phone 061 472622

The Vision Biomed portfolio of patented optical systems includes a wide range of instruments:
- Stereo Optical Inspection Systems
- Low Magnification Stereo Viewers
- Routine Laboratory Microscopes
Together with a range of accessories including:
- Optical accessories
- Photographic accessories (VisionCam 1300 digital camera for digital microscopic imaging)
- Archiving Systems - Vision ArchiVE:
            - Compares live images with archived images
            - Allows for observation of subject over a longer period of time e.g. crystal growth over days in crystallography
            - Network options between lab and pathologist

The Vision Biomed Range allows the operator to wear prescriptive spectacles without any loss of clarity, colour or perspective.

Vision’s “Expanded Pupil” technology reduces eyestrain by diminishing the work load of the cillary muscles in the eye by removing the need to precisely align one’s eyes with ‘restrictive’ eyepieces.

The advanced range of microscopes by Vision Biomed, allows the operator to wear safety goggles or prescriptive spectacles without any loss of clarity, colour or perspective.

Feature – ISIS Eyepiece
In this issue we are featuring the ISIS microscope eyepiece which is a patented 'Expanded-Pupil' eyepiece designed to replace the conventional eyepieces of well known, other brand instruments. ISIS, is an ergonomic alternative to conventional eyepieces and can be retrofitted to a broad range of microscopes, with installation and set up taking only a few seconds.
- Fits most brands of conventional binocular microscopes
- Optimises operator performance by increasing eye-relief and freedom of head movement
- Enables wearing of prescription spectacles
- Eliminates direct contact with the eyepieces
- Removes optical the disturbances known as mouches volantes (floaters)
- Increased operator comfort - reduced fatigue

ISIS increases radial and axial head freedom by at least 8 times that of conventional eyepieces and greatly improves the visibility of optical information across the entire field. A unique eye distance of 38mm allows glasses to be worn in complete comfort, with common weaknesses (long and short sight astigmatism) no longer affecting user efficiency. Throughput and accuracy are enhanced, despite prolonged periods of use. Microscope users' comfort and efficiency can be considerably increased by simply fitting ISIS eyepieces at a cost far less than replacing the entire instrument.

An optimal eye distance of 38mm allows for prescription eyeglasses to be worn in complete comfort.
