Reagecon Drives Success Through Employee Innovation Innovation Labs increase efficiency and effectiveness of overall business Click to View Coverage Clare Champion 12th March 2009 Shannon, Co. Clare, 12th March 2009 - Reagecon Diagnostics Ltd., a Complete Business Solutions Provider to laboratories worldwide, is reaping the rewards of a new and unique initiative called Innovation Labs.
The Innovation Labs were designed by Reagecon as a key part of its overall business strategy.
Through 2008, Reagecon benefited from the initiative with €200k worth of efficiencies being created through over 60 distinct projects. In the case of Reagecon, innovation is at the core of the Company’s Blue Ocean Strategy. This strategy is a rapidly growing business excellence tool that creates new, untapped opportunities (Blue Oceans) instead of focusing on and trying to win a share of the existing, often highly competitive business (Red Oceans).
As a part of this strategy, the company focuses on several key drivers, and all of its business activities are focused around these. One of these drivers is to provide its customers with the Lowest Total Cost of Ownership possible. To achieve this, a relentless attack on costs is required to optimise the effectiveness and efficiency of the company. This is where the innovation labs fit in, and are central to driving efficiencies through the business.
In the weekly-run Labs, groups of employees brainstorm and devise ideas to improve the way the company operates, with the objective of increasing efficiencies and improving the overall effectiveness of the workplace.
The ideas generated can be anything from improvements in current business processes, ideas around cost and time savings, or the use of current resources. Among the most recent projects is an automated document management system that speeds up response times to customer enquiries from both the Cork and Shannon offices. In addition, the re-use of packaging materials has been instigated within the company’s product delivery area.
As a result of the great success of the initiative in terms of cost savings, better processes, customer satisfaction and of course employee motivation, Reagecon has been invited to present to other companies in the area in a skill-transfer day hosted by Clare Campus Skillsnet on March 24th.
Companies need Innovation to remain competitive
Innovation is all about seeing an opportunity in the business, where creativity can make a difference. In particular in the current economic climate it is crucial to use every resource to its full potential. This means that companies need to consider any possible approach to everyday business, processes within the business and the solving of issues that occur – they need to allow innovative ideas. “Nobody understands this business better than our customers, so it is important to harness the knowledge of those who are servicing our customers on a day to day basis to pull together the weight of the whole company and continuously identify better ways of doing business” stressed Reagecon Commercial Director, Don Foynes. He went on to say: “Companies need to recognize the information and resources within themselves and harvest these accordingly. Reagecon is happy to share our experience in this field and encourages other companies to contact us on our Innovation Labs.” How the Labs Operate In order to facilitate undisturbed brainstorming and follow-up Reagecon provides a dedicated room at its Shannon and Cork facilities where the same groups of employees meet at the same time every week for a 90 minute session. A liaison officer from the senior management team is available following every session for advice and direction.
Successful Projects
Among the most recent projects is a document management system that speeds up response times to customer enquiries from both the Cork and Shannon offices. This tackles one of the most important areas in ensuring we remain customer focused, and ensures we review the need for tasks that do not add value to the customer. A very topical improvement which has recently been discussed is the re-use of packaging materials. The type of ideas the group identifies can be in the area of cost, time and resource savings or improvements. There is no limit to creativeness at Reagecon and any idea is taken into consideration.
